Separable Phrasal Verbs: Understanding when and how to place objects in phrasal verbs
Language Functions
Making sentences with separable phrasal verbs
Using pronouns correctly within these structures
Differentiating separable vs. non‑separable verbs
Vocabulary & Examples
Separable verbs (object can go between verb & particle or at the end):
turn off, bring up, fill in, pick up, make up
We turned off the light. / We turned the light off.
Please fill in the form. / Please fill the form in.
Pronoun rule: When using a pronoun (it, him, them) with a separable verb, the pronoun must go in the middle:
turn it off ✔️ (Not: turn off it)
Non-separable verbs: object must always follow the entire phrasal verb (e.g. look after, come across)
I came across an old friend. ✔️ / I came an old friend across. ❌
Grammar Rules (based on British Council & grammar sources):
A separable phrasal verb allows both
verb + particle + object
verb + object + particle
When using a pronoun, always place it in the middle:
bring it up NOT bring up it
Inseparable verbs never split:
look into the issue → never look the issue into
